Read: Acts 5:17-42 . . . and when they had called in the apostles, they had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. As they left the council, they rejoiced that they were considered worthy to suffer dishonor for the sake of the name. And every day in the temple and at home they did not cease to teach and proclaim Jesus as the Messiah.
Think About: In Acts 5 we learn that the Jewish council that had engineered the crucifixion of Jesus wasn't very happy that his followers were carrying on his mission. The Apostles were going around town, performing healings and miracles in the name of Jesus, and generally making nuisances (to the council) of themselves. So, the high priest had them arrested and thrown into prison.
Surprise, surprise! The next morning the temple guard discovered that the Apostles were no longer in the prison. An angel had come during the night and freed them, and they were once again spreading the word about Jesus, the true Messiah.
So, the high priest told the guards to gather the Apostles up and bring them before the council. The Bible tells us, "The high priest questioned them, saying, 'We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and you are determined to bring this man's blood on us.' But Peter and the apostles answered, "We must obey God rather than any human authority. The God of our ancestors raised up Jesus, whom you had killed by hanging him on a tree. God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Savior that he might give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him." Acts 5:27-32.
Well, that attitude didn't sit well with the council. They wanted to kill the Apostles, but Gamaliel, a teacher of the law - in fact, Paul's teacher - pointed out that the Apostles could be like many other followers of false messiahs, and if they were, the fad they had become would soon fade. But if what they said were true, nothing the council did would be able to stop them from succeeding.
That made sense to the council so they flogged them, ordered them to stop proclaiming (knowing they wouldn't), and let them go.
Notice how the Apostles reacted. They rejoiced at being able to suffer dishonor for Jesus' sake.
Sometimes we are reluctant to proclaim Jesus as Lord beyond the walls of the church. Are we afraid of how others will react? After all, we proclaim a life and a lifestyle that does not fit well in modern society. We talk about what we can give when others are most concerned with what they can get. We say we love others when road rage and bullying are common practice. We want to help the least, the last and the lost when others want them to go away.
The Apostles rejoiced because they could suffer dishonor just to proclaim Jesus as Lord and Savior.
Pray this Prayer: Lord, it's always hard for me to talk about you among my unchurched friends. I think they'll think less of me. Let them! It really doesn't matter what they think. It only matters what you think. Amen.
