A Note from Pastor Bill

Dear St. Luke's Saints,

Well, we come to the end of an era this Sunday. That would be the Beth Farabee era. When Beth came to St. Luke's right out of Duke Divinity School in 1999, the world looked a lot different from the one we live in now. That year President Bill Clinton was acquitted in impeachment proceedings in the Senate. The Dow Jones closed above 11,000 for the first time in history. The Columbine High School killings took place in Colorado. SpongeBob SquarePants debuted on Nickelodeon. JFK Jr. died in a plane crash off of Martha's Vineyard. Lance Armstrong won his first Tour de France. And in a deja-vu moment, Vladimir Putin succeeded Boris Yeltsin as President of Russia. A gallon of gas cost $1.22, and stamps were 33 cents. And My Space was introduced to the Internet.

Beth and Anna at Easter

Beth has been one of our associate pastors for more than one-third of our life as a congregation, and she has been the person I have shared ordained ministry with longer than any other person in my career. She and her daughter Anna will begin a new chapter in their lives serving our Lord at First United Methodist Church in Eustis beginning July 1. This Sunday will be her final Sunday with us, and she will be preaching at all of our worship services. Not coincidentally, her superhero sermon is "Wonder Woman: There's a Season for Everything," based on Ecclesiastes 3:1-8. All St. Luke's Vacation Bible School (VBS) families are invited to sing along with PowerSurge as they perform VBS songs at the 9:30 a.m. contemporary worship service. We will also celebrate the sacrament of communion at contemporary worship on June 24 and at traditional worship on July 1.

We will continue celebrating Beth's ministry at "Beth's Farewell Bash" beginning at 4:00 p.m. in the gym on Sunday afternoon. Please reserve your free tickets today so we can make the proper arrangements for the reception food. Pick up your tickets in the Welcome Hall in Building C between worship services. It's going to be a time of music, remembrance, lots of laughs, and surely some tears.

An era ends for Beth and us here, but a new one begins. As God has been in our yesterdays, so God will be in our tomorrows.

With faith, hope, love, and deep gratitude for Beth and Anna,

Bill

Read: I turned my head and saw yet another wisp of smoke on its way to nothingness: a solitary person, completely alone - no children, no family, no friends - yet working obsessively late into the night, compulsively greedy for more and more, never bothering to ask, "Why am I working like a dog, never having any fun? And who cares?" More smoke. A bad business.
It's better to have a partner than go it alone.
Share the work, share the wealth.
And if one falls down, the other helps,
But if there's no one to help, tough!

Two in a bed warm each other.
Alone, you shiver all night.

By yourself you're unprotected.
With a friend you can face the worst.
Can you round up a third?
A three-stranded rope isn't easily snapped.

Ecclesiastes 4:7-12 (The Message)

Think About: The movie this week is The Avengers. I have to admit, it wasn't my favorite of the year. I guess that is because I was never really into comic books. Another character flaw, no doubt.

I get the point about team work, banding together to overcome adversity. But I want to be cautious about waiting for superheroes - that victory is achieved only by unique and basically non-human "talents", masked in a clever costume. The same risk attends our view of God - that God is only an extra-special superhero whom we call upon in times of need and ignore the rest of the time. "Commissioner, there is trouble in Gotham City! Turn on the God Signal!"

The wisdom of Ecclesiastes is in its ordinariness. The strengths of two together are not superhuman. They are basic: work together; strive together; rejoice together; weep together; keep each other warm. Actually it is our clever masks and the walls we erect that keep us from living Ecclesiastical wisdom. The Avengers heroes had to hide their identities - we must reveal our identities to be truly strong. When we get out of our costumes, when we become real, when we bring our talents to true priorities - then we are a meaningful strand of rope, which combined with other strands, will do the work.

And when we add the unbreakable strand of God - we are living in wisdom.

Pray this Prayer: Oh infinite and sacred. Let me be unmasked. Let me be a powerful strand of rope in the work to done. And let me always be aware that it is the third strand from God that gives the rope true strength. Don't let all my efforts turn to whiffs of smoke. Amen.
