Upper Room Daily Devotional

A Note from Pastor BillBill Barnes

Dear Family in faith,

This week in worship the David saga continues, as he is confronted by his trusted prophet Nathan, who like apparently everyone else in the kingdom has become aware of David's affair with Bathsheba and his involvement in the death of her husband Uriah.

You may recall that earlier in the story, when David had learned of the battlefield deaths of Saul and Jonathan, he had lamented, "How the mighty have fallen..." (2 Samuel 1:25) Now his words come back to haunt him as they become a personal indictment of his own actions. When he had first seen Bathsheba, he was walking on the roof of his palace, perhaps just enjoying a view from "the top" of his kingdom. After Nathan figuratively places a mirror in front of him so that he can see what he has done, suddenly his view is from "the bottom."

How quickly we have seen political, business, and religious leaders fall from the top to the bottom: Clinton, Ensign, Sanford, Madoff, Azzouz, Perlman, Bakker, Swaggert, and Haggard, to name just a few. But in our own lives we know the same sense of freefall when we "miss the mark of our high calling." One moment it seems that we are on top of everything and the next it's like we are looking up from the bottom of a well. That's just the way it is with us, and has been so since Adam and Eve plucked that fruit from the tree.

Join us this week as we squirm in our seats thinking both about David's sins and our own. But also know that in Jesus Christ you who are loved and forgiven by God, and that you can in the words of the 1936 Jerome Kern song, "Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start all over again."

Read the rest of the Nathan and David story in 2 Samuel 12. I am with Kim in Sanibel Island this week for vacation, but I will be dusting the sand off in order to be with you on the Central Campus this weekend.

With faith, hope, and love,

Bill

Leadership Summit

Leadership Summit
Event Date & Time: 8/6/2009
St. Luke's will be a private viewing site for The Leadership Summit 2009 on August 6 - 7, 2009. The Leadership Summit is an annual event organized by Willow Creek Community Church out of South Barrington, Illinois. What began as a compelling vision for courageous leadership in the local church has caught fire and spread among leaders hungry to be developed and challenged. The Leadership Summit has become more than a solitary event on the calendar: it is a perpetual movement of men and women whose relentless global mission is to develop authentic leaders for the sake of the local church and their communities. This rich expanse reflects incredible cultural diversity and racial heritage, and does not dilute in the face of tough economic times.
