Once a year, St. Luke’s gleans unharvested fruit off of local trees and donates it to the Society of St. Andrews to help hungry families in Central Florida.
We had a terrific year in 2019, where we doubled the amount of citrus picked in 2018. On Saturday, February 2, we had a team of 3 adults, 5 teenagers, and 3 elementary-aged students pick citrus at 2 locations. This netted 1,200 pounds of fruit, which was delivered to Second Harvest Food Bank that same day.
The team picked 44 bags of fruit at our first location and 72 bags at the second location totaling 116 bags of citrus at 1,200 pounds. Michael, who is the Society of St. Andrew Program Coordinator, also helped to pick and deliver the bags of citrus to Second Harvest Food Bank.
Our Next Gleaning Event
On Saturday, March 9 from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., St. Lukers will join the Society of St. Andrews in packing fresh fruits and vegetables at the Dolphin Resort at Walt Disney World. The food is donated by vendors displaying their produce at the SE Produce Council event earlier in the day. Volunteers must be 14 years and older.
