| UMRC is an organization that was formed in 1989 after hurricane Hugo to provide disaster relief to families who didn’t have the resources to repair their homes after the devastation of the hurricane. Hibben UMC was where UMRC was born. Used as a disaster relief center, hundreds of volunteers provided a massive effort dispersing tons of food, clothing and building supplies to needy families Once the initial disaster assistance was given, over 300 homes had been temporarily repaired and it was realized there was a much greater, on-going need for low income and poverty plagued families to have the same kind of assistance provided them that was available after Hugo. In June of 1991, the church granted the Relief Center to remain open give assistance to families in the counties surrounding Charleston , S.C. In the years since Hugo, over 1800 homes have been repaired including the construction of 55 new homes. |
