“Don’t just count your blessings. Share them!” I found this little saying on a plate in a gift shop when I was visiting some friends in my hometown of Naples last weekend. Isn’t it great?! What a neat way to make this classic old adage fresh again. As we continue our stewardship journey together into the Thanksgiving season we know there will be many opportunities to both count and share the blessings God has given us. While preaching on Children’s Sabbath I shared three words that can get in the way of our attempts to run our best: “mine,” “now” and “win.” In our society that puts a high value on personal ownership, instant gratification and fierce competition it’s hard not to be caught up in these ideals, but Jesus calls us to something different. Jesus calls us to use our resources with the bigger picture in mind. With long term goals of justice, healing and compassion to guide our thoughts and actions as God’s ambassadors in the world. I hope our stewardship focus verse, Hebrews 12:1-2, “…let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith…” will be a great reminder to look to the bigger picture vision of Jesus as we run together. When we do this everybody wins! With many blessings to count and to share, |
