A Message from Pastor Jenn

As I sat in one of our meetings with the staff, I actually found myself asking out loud, “Is this Sunday the Super Bowl?” A quiet pall fell across the table, and I realized my faux pas. Of course it’s Super Bowl Sunday – how could I possibly forget. I even know who is playing – the Bears and the Horses! Right?

We are gearing up as a nation for the unofficial national holiday of Football – when we gather together with friends around food that is fantastic and laden with calories and half of us watch the game, while the other half waits for the commercials. I’m looking forward most to the halftime show! It’s an American tradition, much like fireworks on the 4th and turkey on Thanksgiving. This is the day we gather as a family and watch “the game.”

What a perfect day to also participate in a little “relational evangelism.” Why not invite friends who may not have a church home over to watch the game and introduce them to some of your St. Luke’s friends? During worship we will be sharing a great commercial related to our Primetime Preaches which will be on the website for you to share with your friends during halftime. Or as the coaches and players inevitably “thank God” for the win imagine the discussion you could share with friends by asking, “How involved does God become in our sports games?” and ”If God helped one team win, where is God with the team that lost?

In Luke 13, Jesus is speaking to the disciples trying to explain to them what the kingdom of God is like. He says: “How can I picture God’s kingdom for you? What kind of story can I use?” One of our roles in life is to seek natural ways of relating the story of God’s Kingdom to others. Why not use a moment of fun and fellowship, gathered around the TV to watch a game, as a chance to mention St. Luke’s and to share your thoughts about God? Who knows where a simple conversation like this could lead? Maybe your Sunday could be more Super than you could have ever imagined.

Grace and Peace,
Jenn.
