Dear St. Lukers, If you’re out and about this time of year it’s next to impossible to notice that Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. The local CVS, Walgreens, Publix and Albertson’s have entire aisles devoted to the celebration of love with red hearts and arrow shooting cupids galore. The morning news shows have special segments on the peaks and pitfalls of relationships and Good Morning America is airing their own version of the Newlywed Game. There’s no escaping it, love is in the air. Or is it?... I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having a particular time of the year when we pay extra attention to those we care about. It’s actually kind of fun to see all the different ways companies come up with packaging chocolate and red is my favorite color! But, I wonder sometimes how much this type of stuff has to do with real love. The kind of love that Jesus talks about in the scripture passage we’ll be looking at in worship this week Matthew 5:38-48. Here are a few of these verses from the translation, “The Message” by Eugene Peterson. “Here’s another old saying that deserves a second look: ‘Eye for eye, tooth for tooth.’ Is that going to get us anywhere?... No more tit-for-tat stuff. Live generously. You’re familiar with the old written law, ‘Love your friend,’ and its unwritten companion, ‘Hate your enemy.’ I’m challenging that. I’m telling you love your enemies. Let them bring out the best in you, not the worst. When someone gives you a hard time, respond with the energies of prayer, for then you are working out of your true selves, your God-created selves… If all you do is love the lovable, do you expect a bonus? Anybody can do that. If you simply say hello to those who greet you, do you expect a medal? Any run of the mill sinner does that. In a word, what I’m saying is, grow up. You’re kingdom subjects. Now live like it. Live out your God-created identity. Live generously and graciously toward others, the way God lives toward you.” This Valentine’s season I challenge you as I challenge myself to practice this kind of Jesus love in daily life. A love that knows no limits or boundaries. A love that we have to give away only because God gave it to us first! With faith, hope and a whole lotta love, |
