Dear St. Lukers, One of my daughter’s favorite things to do is play “dress up.” When she goes back in her room and things get quiet, it’s a good bet that in few minutes she’ll appear transformed. Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Tinkerbell, Minnie Mouse, she loves them all, complete with wings and wands and wigs. I love the fact that she has such a vivid imagination. Pretending to be someone else is nothing but innocence and fun at age four and it’s my prayer that she hangs on to that innocence as long as possible. This Sunday in worship we are continuing our sermon series, “Spread Your Wings.” We’ve been moving through the letters of word “spread” and so far have claimed Kingdom living as sacred, passionate, and radical. This week we’ll be thinking about the fact that true Kingdom living requires engagement. Jesus modeled this kind of engagement for us through his relationships with others and his care for the greater world. Sometimes as adults it’s hard for us to let our guard down and share our hurts, our joys, our concerns, our passions or in others words, to be real with people. Our attempts at pretending to be someone else or something else are not so innocent and can be caused by complicated insecurities. How many of us have thought, “If they really knew me, they wouldn’t like me.” At one point or another, there are very few people, if any, who have been able to avoid this kind of thinking and when it happens the mask goes on. But, as Christ-followers we are challenged to do our very best to take off our masks, step out of the personas we put on and trust. We are called to trust that the acceptance and grace will be there for us as we give it to others, and trust that we can make a difference in the world by raising our voice on behalf of those who are voiceless. Last week in Contemporary Worship we signed over 700 letters that will be sent to Senator Nelson, Senator Martinez and President Bush to let them know we support sending a UN Peacekeeping Force to the suffering region of Darfur. This week in Traditional Worship we will have the opportunity to do the same thing. We want our leaders to know that we are a congregation who is committed to being authentic with each other so we can join our voices and engage in the injustices of the world to make a real difference. I hope you’ll be able to come on Sunday to worship as we gather around the communion table with no pretense or pretending. That we come knowing none of us individually “has it all together” but that together sharing grace and hope we can get a lot closer to the wholeness God desires for us and the world. Blessings, |
