Dear St. Lukers, One of my favorite things to do over the summer when I was in elementary and middle school was to spend a week at our United Methodist camp in Leesburg, FL. If any of you have ever been there you know what a great place it is. Air conditioned cabins, private bathrooms, two, large air conditioned dining halls. There are many students from our NexGen ministry here at St. Luke’s that attend camp and several have gone on to serve there as counselors. Now you know you’re getting older when you start telling “back in my day” stories, but when I was a camper at “Camp Leesburg” as we liked to call it, the accommodations were not quite so plush. The cabins were small, un-air conditioned cinderblock buildings with metal bunk beds. The shower houses were anything but private and shower curtains acted as the bathroom doors. We ate family style in the dining hall and shouted over the huge fans mounted on the walls to keep the hot, Florida summer air moving. And you know what? I loved it! Now don’t get me wrong, given the choice today I would definitely not want to go back to these spartan conditions, but at the time I didn’t know any different and when the week was over I was never ready to go home. One of my favorite times of the day at camp was in the morning when we got together for singing. I remember a lot of those old songs and one of them went like this: The fruit of the Spirit’s not bananas. The fruit of the Spirit’s not bananas. If you wanna be a banana you might as well hear it. You can’t be the fruit of the Spirit cause the fruit is: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control! Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control! We would sing this song over and over again substituting different fruits for each new chorus and it became a game to see who could shout out the most exotic one. As crazy as we usually got was kiwi or kumquat. :-) This Sunday we will be beginning a new sermon series, “Summer at St. Luke’s: Preparing for the Trip of Your Life.” During the month of June we’ll be talking about the fruits of the Spirit as must-have items on your packing list as you set out on the journey of everyday life. Last Sunday in worship we celebrated the gift of the Holy Spirit to some of the earliest believers on Pentecost. These men and women were able to do amazing things and helped the church to take flight. How can our lives as believers today demonstrate the presence of the Holy Spirit?... by bearing its fruit. Not watermelon, apples or oranges, but love, joy, peace and much more. I look forward to seeing you in worship as we claim who we are called to be as disciples of Jesus Christ by living it out loud in the world- with or without air-conditioning! Blessings, |
