Well, around this time of year I tend to get a little sentimental. It was five years ago this week that I was pregnant, waddling around the halls of St. Luke’s wondering when my daughter Anna would decide to grace us with her presence. In my opinion, at that point, it couldn’t happen soon enough. You moms out there know what I’m talking about! Pregnancy in the summer in Florida is a real experience and the Slurpee machine at the Bay Hill 7-11 became one of my best friends. What can I say, some women crave pickles and ice cream for me it was Slurpees. :) But I digress… Anna finally made her way into the world on July 5th, 2002, at 2:37 am and I can’t believe she’ll be turning five next week and heading off to Kindergarten in the Fall. So much has happened over the last five years in our world. We have been struggling with the harsh realities of war, the threat of terrorism is a constant concern and national/global issues of poverty and injustice continue to be very real. It’s hard for me not to be afraid of what the future will hold for my sweet faced, innocent, growing girl. I know fear for our children is a natural issue for all of us whether we are biological parents or not. It seems like we all have to be more careful than we used to be and living with this heightened sense of anxiety can be draining. This Sunday in worship we will be thinking again about the packing list for the trip of our lives. You will be encouraged and challenged, even in the midst of life’s many uncertainties, to pack love that strengthens and unpack fear that depletes. 1 John 4:18-19 says it this way: “There is no room in love for fear. Well-formed love banishes fear. Since fear is crippling, a fearful life- fear of death, fear of judgment- is one not yet fully formed in love. We, though, are going to love- love and be loved. First we were loved, now we love. He loved us first.” It’s not easy and it’s going to take practice, but with God all things are possible! God does not want us to live life frozen by fear but instead freed by our faith in Christ. A faith that claims Christ’s life is a light that shines in the darkness and will never be overcome by anything. I pray each and every one of us will commit ourselves to be bearers of this light so that we can pass it along to our children. They deserve it, God wants it… let’s do it! Blessings, |
