Dear St. Luker’s, It’s hard to believe we’re already coming up on the last Sunday in July. The summer is slipping away and we’ve only got two more weeks in worship to focus specifically on packing the fruits of the Spirits and unpacking the stuff that weighs us down on our daily journey of life. Of course neither list would be complete without deciding to pack self-control and unpack anger. We all know what it’s like to struggle with anger whether it’s in the midst of an argument with your spouse, dealing with a grumpy boss, neighbor or child or on I-4 when you get cut off one too many times. Sometimes we may even feel angry with God when hurtful things happen to us or people we love. When we feel like our prayers are not being heard by our heavenly parent or even worse ignored. With the teachings of love at the center of our Christian faith it’s easy for us to come to the misunderstanding that being angry and being a Christian are incompatible. Hopefully after spending much of this summer reading the Psalms together we can claim the freedom to express our honest, human emotions to God just like the Psalmists did. An authentic life of faith is not about pretending our anger or frustration or fear are not realities of life, but instead trusting enough to honestly share these realities with God and then believe that God will help us in the midst of them. As our new Minister of Spiritual Formation, LeeAnn Inman said as we were kicking around ideas about the topic and the text for this week, “There’s a big difference between unpacking anger and unloading it.” :-) This Sunday, we’ll be thinking about these things and more as we gather together to lift up every part of ourselves in worship to God. Look forward to seeing you there! Blessings, |
