Hello Dear Friends, In our summer companions class this week we will discuss the ways in which we experience God; namely the manner in which God is “Above Us,” “Within Us,” and “Around Us.” And I will add another thought of my own, the God that is “Beneath Us.” Here’s is a little teaser: God is “Above Us.” – like the Eagle that soars high among the clouds, God gives us a bird’s eye view of our lives, helps us see where we have been and where we are to be going, and helps us rise above our troubles and catch the wind of the Spirit. We are meant to rise up over the mountains and valleys below us, and not be overwhelmed by them. We are meant to be free, and when we rise up to the high calling of God, we can be free, and we can transcend the limitations of our world, and our place in it. God is “Within Us.” There is a candle in every heart, and that candle can pierce the deepest darkness and show the way out of the deepest pit. But we must light that candle, protect it, and lift it up high. We must develop the faith that is within us, enlarge and clarify our image of God, expand our awareness of how God works, and tap into the hidden resources of ourselves through the wholesome self therapies of prayer, self retreat, introspection, study, self examination, and self care. The greatest journey of all is the journey from the head to the heart. God is “Around Us.” Most everyone enjoys the beauty and sanctity of nature. The great outdoors beckons us all to come and see the God of Creation, the glory and splendor and majesty of our world. But what about the God that is around us in the faces of our friends, the company of our family, and the frontiers of human interaction. Everyone we meet could be an Angel in disguise, Jesus knocking at our door. And we can even learn from our enemies according to the Gospel. Look for God in people and you will be surprised how close God will be. God is “Beneath Us.” No matter how far your fall into the pits of life, how lonely and broken your heart may be, there is a Rock bed at the base of every canyon, and a river usually runs through it. Find the river at the bottom, walk on the rock, and it will lead out. And remember sometimes the way out is the way through, or it is a slow arduous climb up. You are in good hands – God is with you, and beneath you, all the way. This Sunday August 5th, we will explore the God who is with us in the goodness that is bestowed on us and the goodness we offer to each other. Hope you will join us in worship, for “Goodness Sake.” Love, David |
