A Note from Pastor Bill

Dear St. Luke’s Saints:

I don’t recall now when I started to do it, but one summer years ago I decided to dedicate a Sunday to answering questions from the congregation at each worship service. It became known as “Ask Bill Anything” Sunday. And ask you did! Over the years you have asked tough theological questions about divorce, forgiveness, suicide, sexual orientation, capital punishment, abortion, and hundreds of other things. You have asked about St. Luke’s ministries and vision, plans for the future, and decisions of the day. And you have asked personal questions like how I knew I was called into the ministry, how I met my wife, Kim, and whether I wear boxers or briefs! (Unlike Bill Clinton years ago, I refused to answer that one!)

One year I made the well-intentioned, but misguided promise to answer all the questions I didn’t have time for in worship via e-mail. I spent THE REST OF THE SUMMER writing responses nearly every night! The next year I wised up and said that I would be glad to answer any question IN PERSON.

Well, it’s that time again, only the difference is that this year Jenn Stiles Williams is going to join me for “Ask Bill and Jenn Anything” this coming Sunday at all services. My guess is that we will have a bit of dialogue between us as we make our way through your written questions. How it works is this: you will write your question on a piece of paper provided, ushers will collect them and bring them to us while we sing some hymns, and then we will do our best to answer what we can. Some of the questions you may be asking will require more time than we can give in a 20 minute opportunity. For instance, the question, “Why aren’t dinosaurs mentioned in the Bible?” would require quite a bit of information about Biblical tradition, the interface of science and religion, and the extent to which a book of faith informs our ongoing exploration of the mysteries of the world. We could spend the whole time just trying to get close to an answer for that one. For that reason Jenn and I will be choosing questions that we can fairly adequately give a response to in the time we have.

So come and be with us for an informal time of sharing. And by the way, this is a traditional way of teaching in the rabbinic style. Check out Jesus’ teaching in the Gospels. You will find that in the majority of cases what he says comes as a result of a question posed to him. Now remember, however, that this is “Ask BILL AND JENN Anything!” We don’t claim to have the insight of Jesus; we just claim to have his love.

See you Sunday,

Bill
