Dear friends, “Train up a child in they way they should go, and when they are old they will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6 Today is “meet the teacher” day. Each of my children will go to their schools and meet their new teachers for the year. Schools supplies have been purchased, school clothes have been readied; everyone is getting prepared to start a new year of learning and training. We prepare diligently for a new school year because we want our children to start out on the right foot. I sometimes wonder if we take their spiritual education as seriously. How are we preparing our children and families to start a new year of Sunday School classes and worship? A former children’s minister took this question literally one year and purchased “Sunday Back Packs” for every child in the church or who visited the church. These bright red backpacks were brought to church every Sunday and filled with journals the children had written their prayers in and folders which brought home crafts and study sheets the children could share with their families. Bright Red Backpacks became a symbol to the entire church that what was learned on Sunday was just as important as what was learned during the week. But these children also knew what they learned on Sunday would be a part of how they learned during the week. Each week in their back pack there was an assignment about something they could do during the week to make a difference in their school. Being kind, befriending the lonely child, being cooperative, being a Light for God. This Sunday we have a special opportunity in worship to pray for our schools in very tangible ways. Children will lead us in worship and will remind us they will go off to school this year, not only to learn reading and math, but to share what they have learned at St. Luke’s about what it means to be a child of God. We will bless our teachers and administrators as they seek to grow children’s minds and characters, and touch their hearts as well. We hope you will make this a part of your own preparation to start a new year, no matter what age you are. Let’s begin a new year of learning and growth grounded as a Body of Christ in worship and prayer. Grace and Peace, |
