A Note from Pastor Bill

Dear Saints,

Our “What Are We Made Of?” sermon series continues this week with the mission essential of REACH.

Do you remember how it was that you came to St. Luke’s? How it was that you came to faith in the first place? For most of us, it was a person who was the connection. Back by the Sea of Galilee, it was his brother Andrew who brought Peter to Jesus. (John 1:40-41) It was Philip who brought his best buddy Nathanael. (John 1:43-36) Throughout the history of the Christian movement it has been the story of people reaching people. Our Vision statement begins, “That the believers of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church will reach as many people as possible in Central Florida, introducing them to eternal life in Jesus Christ…” The scripture basis for this mission essential are the words of Jesus in Acts 1:8: “…and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

In Jesus’ day Central Florida would have definitely been the ends of the earth. (And just about 30 years ago it would have seemed that way right here in what was rural Orange County!) We are still his witnesses, even though Apopka-Vineland and Conroy-Windermere look more and more like city streets and less and less like country roads.

On Sunday Jenn and I will be lifting up the high importance of fulfilling our mandate from Jesus to reach others with a multi-faceted witness to the power of grace and love in the Gospel. You may be surprised to learn that your reach is already bigger and better than you might think.

Upcoming Opportunities and Information

STAKE YOUR CLAIM!

If you missed the opportunity to stake your claim in St. Luke’s Vision in the circle around the cross, be sure to do so this Sunday. Take a stake from a bucket near the sanctuary or gym, use the black Sharpie to write your family name and any other message on the stake, and then go place it in the grass along with the hundreds of others already there. (One stake per family unit, please.)

PARK YOUR CAR!

As much as we know you like the feeling of sand in your shoes (especially those open toe sandals you wear) we are going to be re-sodding the parking lots over the next six weeks. When you arrive at church you will see the most popular areas (i.e.: the ones closest to the entrances) roped off. The new sod will take about two weeks to get a good hold, after which time we will allow only Sunday parking on the new areas for another four weeks. We will be replacing different areas as we do the installations, so please help us by only parking in the designated places. We continue to prefer grass parking over asphalt for environmental reasons and because of the need for large retention ponds that more pavement requires.

REMEMBER YOUR SPECIAL OFFERING!

If you use offering envelopes provided by St. Luke’s you will find that there is a special envelope for our annual Christian Service Center gift this Sunday. The CSC is our partner in ministry in Central Florida, providing assistance and hope for persons through direct aid. Many persons we help never come to our doors here, but the doors of the Christian Service Center both in West Orange at the Life Center, and downtown open to the thousands of needy men, women, and children who are our family in the Lord. Your generous gift confirms our REACH of love, hope, and healing. If you do not use offering envelopes to give, please make your check out to St. Luke’s and clearly make the memo to the Christian Service Center.
