A Note from Pastor Bill

Dear St. Luke’s Saints:

As the second week of Advent always brings a somewhat troubling visit from John the Baptist, with his camelhair clothes and insect menu choices, the third week takes us to the home of Elizabeth, a close relative of Mary, the mother of Jesus. Elizabeth is already pregnant with John, who would take to baptizing thirty years later. But it is Mary’s story that captivates us.

Her song of believing response to God’s choice of her as the mother of the Savior is known as “The Magnificat,” and is our scripture focus this week from Luke Chapter 1. Mary faithfully offers not just her womb, but also her willingness to submit to God’s design for salvation.

When she was here on our staff, the Rev. Jan Richardson wrote a wonderful book for this holy season: Night Visions: Searching the Shadows of Advent and Christmas. Here is her reflection titled “Vessels”

I measure my life in vessels. They trace the contours of my days. Teacup, bowl, oil lamp, pitcher, baptismal font, Communion chalice, basin, bathtub. I sleep in the belly of night and wake under a downturned bowl of blue.

I ponder their shapes as I begin to understand my own longing: wanting to be held, fighting against being contained.

Teach me, I say. Tea, food, oil, water, wine, stars, sky. Teach me how to gracefully, powerfully fill my space.

You hollow us out, God,
so that we may carry you,
and you endlessly fill us
only to be emptied again.

Make smooth our inward spaces
and sturdy,
that we may hold you
with less resistance
and bear you
with deeper grace.

Our worship theme this week is “It’s a Wonderful Life! Believe it!” We will be learning something of what it means to find the wonder of life through believing that God is doing something amazing even in us!

For your study before Sunday: Isaiah 35:1-10 and Luke 1:47-55

With faith, hope, and love,
Bill

Karen Brown Retirement Reception
This Sunday please stop by the rotunda area in building "C" after the 9:30 worship services to express your thanks and appreciation for all that Karen has brought to St. Luke's during her many years of employment. Karen will still be active in the life of St. Luke's but will be retiring effective December 20. We will recognize her at all of our worship services this Sunday, December 16.

How Can You Help???
We are almost at the end of our renovations to buildings A and B but have a few more items to complete. If you can assist with painting we sure could use your help. Our goal is to have the projected completed by January 12, 2008 so we can share this blessing with our many visitors during the Large Church Initiative Conference which begins January 21. We have a few classrooms that still need to be painted, some detail work to do down the hallways and furniture to be unpacked and loaded in. If you or your older teenage children are available during the holiday break we can supply you with a project. Please contact Kelly Smith at ksmith@st.lukes.org for more information or to sign up to help.

Campus Work Day
We will be holding a campus wide clean up/finish up day from 8:00 a.m. through noon on January 12. There will be many projects for all ages to assist with as we do the final sprucing up of our campus both inside and outside in preparation for the Larch Church Initiative Conference. Please contact Kelly Smith at ksmith@st.lukes.org for more information and to sign up. We need your help to make this conference a success and what a great way to demonstrate what St. Luke's is all about... being a family in Christ!

If you have not yet turned in your “Yes!” card commitment for 2008, please try to do so this week. Every positive response to God is equally important!

Body Building receipts are close to $3,900,000. It would be great to end the year with $4,000,000 paid on the pledges we made since the beginning of the campaign in 2006.

The Avent Calendar is available on www.st.lukes.org.
