Upper Room Daily Devotional

A Note from Pastor BillBill Barnes

Dear family in faith,

Because we are a large church with six separate worship services plus the Powerhouse family worship and two youth NexGen services each week, we intentionally plan for yearly church-wide study opportunities that are also the theme for our worship together. So no matter whether you worship in a contemporary style at the HopeSpring or Central campus or prefer traditional or age-level worship, you can join the entire St. Luke's family in one unified focus for spiritual growth.

Beginning this Sunday, and continuing for six more weeks, we will be studying, discussing, and preaching about John Wesley's "Three Simple Rules," using a very readable little book by United Methodist Bishop Reuben Job. John Wesley was the founder of the Methodist movement in the Church of England in the 18th century.

Our "Three Simple Rules for Christian Living" small groups start meeting next week and if you are interested in taking part we need you to sign up right away! Groups that meet during the week will start on Monday, April 27 and groups that meet on Sunday will start on May 3. There are several options to choose from at www.st.lukes.org/ThreeSimpleRules. Because we need to let our small group facilitators know who will be joining them in the weeks to come, on Thursday afternoon, April 23 we will begin closing classes that do not fill up. In case you are not able to make the commitment to be a part of a small group at this time, this is a book that lends itself well to individual study. Books will be on sale this Sunday, April 26 and next Sunday May 3 after each worship service for $10 per set. Your worship experience on Sunday will be greatly enriched if you are reading along with us and these "Three Simple Rules" will challenge you in compelling ways on your journey of discipleship.

I will resume my weekly Exegesis Bible study on Thursday at 6:30 pm. (We normally meet in the Sanctuary, but this week only we will gather in the Choir Room on the second floor of the B building.) We will continue to explore the texts that relate to the upcoming. Sunday worship services, but Exegesis will not take the place of the small group "Three Simple Rules" study. I trust that it will augment it, as our previous Thursday night studies have done.

This week I traveled to the committee meeting of the leadership for the Large Church Initiative, and I continue to be more grateful than I can express for the amazing vitality, witness, and outreach of our St. Luke's/HopeSpring family in faith.

With faith, hope, and the simple but powerful claim of love,

Bill
