A Note from Pastor BillBill Barnes

Dear St. Luke's Saints,

While I was in Cuba, the pastoral team here at St. Luke's decided to alter the focus for worship this coming Sunday and emphasize stability and hope in relationships. The instability of our world significantly impacts the stability of our marriages and family relationships. We have seen a growing number of persons experiencing crisis and brokenness in their homes this year, as the ground of assumed stability in life has been shaking. Accordingly, the sermons this week will be based on Ephesians 2:1-10, where Paul reminds the church in Ephesus that even though they once were like everyone else in the world, subject to all the passions of life, God, in his rich mercy made them alive together with Christ. What this says to me is that there is hope for all of us to find the security we seek in Jesus.

This was especially obvious to those of us who went to Cuba. The people are very poor by our standards, but much richer than we are in their love for Christ and for each other. The average Methodist minister makes less than $10 a month, and most others average well under $20 a month. The Cuban economy is in shambles, basic staples of life are rationed, and luxuries, like soap, socks, and even ice cream require months of saving in order to buy them. Nevertheless, the people are joyful, hopeful, faithful, and extremely loving. Worship is exuberant. I preached three times, participated in a healing service, and served communion while there. Worship lasted longer than our hour and was filled with singing, dancing (preachers included!) and loud shouts of "Glory to God" and "Hallelujah." Marriages and family relationships were incredibly strong and lasting. The only reason we could see for that is the amazing and humbling way Jesus is the center of everything in their lives.

Meanwhile, back at my ranch we are experiencing the closeness of family in a way that is a bit challenging for us! The night before I left for Cuba a pipe burst in the home of my daughter and son-in-law, flooding everything. While I was away they moved in to live with us for about two months as the repairs are made to their house. Of course Brady, our grandson, moved in too, so we are stepping over toys as well as suitcases. We are now just like a Cuban family, except we are not all sleeping in just two rooms!

Love makes a difference; but the love of God in Christ makes all the difference, all the time. I hope you will be with us on Sunday. "Gloria a Dios!"

Bill

The APP I Want to Be!

Friday, October 29, 2010

Read: One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, "Of all the commandments, which is the most important?"

"The most important one," answered Jesus, "is this: 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strengths.' The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these." Mark 12:28-31

Think About: Reconciliation is a difficult thing to consider. Often we make it more difficult by our unwillingness to forgive injuries, real or perceived. However, we have a wonderful model of reconciliation! I would submit that the accounts of the life of Jesus, contained in the four Gospels, should be our prime model!

Throughout these four gospels, there are numerous examples of where Jesus turned the social norms on their head: Eating with tax collectors, speaking with the Samaritan woman at the well, and boiling down all of the law into two simple statements. Here are only three examples, but this pattern holds throughout the Gospels. Each time, Jesus was interacting with an individual who, by their disobedience to the law, was clearly outside of the established relationship with God.

However, since Jesus WAS God incarnate, or God made flesh, these actions are certainly prime examples of God coming close to us, in order that we may be reconciled!

The grand narrative of Scripture is a story of reconciliation between God and all of creation! The entirety of God's effort to restore us to a right relationship with him contains effort after effort, culminating in the death and resurrection of his only Son, our Lord! How much more effort can be put into restoring a relationship?

If we are indeed called to represent Christ to the nations, and God, through Christ, was willing to die in order to reconcile us to our creator, how can we not work to reconcile with our fellow man, with other nations, so that they may see Christ in us and therefore be reconciled?

Pray this Prayer: Heavenly Father, give us the grace to see where others are hurting, the compassion to reach out, and the wisdom to show others how to be reconciled to you and each other. Amen.
