A Note from Pastor BillBill Barnes

Dear family in faith,

A new "season" in the church year begins today. Today is Epiphany, making as we noted last Sunday the manifestation of Jesus to the world, commemorated by the arrival in Bethlehem of Magi (gentile priestly king-makers). The first Sunday in Epiphany always takes us to the Jordan River where the now adult Jesus is baptized by John and begins his public ministry. That event has had significant meaning for believers ever since. In fact, the last thing that Jesus said before his ascension was a command to go into the world "baptizing in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit."

This coming Sunday at all of our services we will reaffirm our baptisms (or in some cases, anticipate them) by using the simple gift of water. Some of you were present at the 11:00 a.m. traditional service on December 20 when LeeAnn Inman and I baptized my grandson, Brady. Aside from some weddings and baptisms I have performed for other family members, I had never officiated at a sacramental moment for my own children. When Kristin and Meredith were baptized as babies, each time Kim and I stood as parents to affirm our vows as another clergyperson administered the water. When Kristin was married to Sean five years ago, I did not perform the wedding. I stood as the Father-of-the-Bride to present Kristin on behalf of our family. So last month was the first time in my 36 year journey in the ministry that I was the officiating clergyperson for an event in my own family's life.

People present said I was "more subdued," or "just holding back my tears," or "trying hard to keep it together." It may have seemed so, but there were actually two things going on. I was trying hard not to have the focus moved away from Kristin, Sean, and Brady onto me, the gaga grandfather, and I was also deeply moved by the gift of taking my own grandson into my arms and welcoming him by water into the family of faith that has so lovingly nurtured and cared for me all of my life. And to think it all goes back 2000 years to a little river in Israel!

Our hope is that the touch of water for you on Sunday will put you in touch with the eternal touch of God in your life. Read these scripture lessons in preparation for the Service of Baptismal Reaffirmation: Isaiah 43:1-7 and Luke 3:15-17, 21-22.

With faith, hope, and love,

Bill

HopeSpring Update

Dear HopeSpring family,

This week we will gather to learn about and celebrate the rich meaning that comes to us through the gift of water as we reaffirm our Baptisms (or look forward to the time when we make that decision.) Please bring your Bible to church because we are going to do some scripture study about how God has used water in significant ways to shape our lives in faith.

We will join in an activity that will connect repentance with renewal before we come to the water of reaffirmation, and as always we will celebrate God's amazing love for us through Holy Communion.

Students from 6th through 12th grades are invited along with their parents to consider joining the HopeSpring confirmation journey, which begins with a "Kick-Off" gathering at 9:30 am on Sunday. Weekly Sunday morning classes will begin on January 24th. Val Dobson is our registrar.

Gary and Kim Shockley will be our guests on Sunday, January 17th for a breakfast reception and then a time of sharing at 11:00 am. Gary was our church planting pastor who now serves The United Methodist Church through our Board of Discipleship. He is a key leader in church planting nationally through the Path One ministry. Kim serves locally in our East Central District working with churches for Congregational Transformation. You will be impressed with their work and the movement of the Holy Spirit in their ministries.

Remember to use the collection box for the Society of St. Andrew hunger emphasis. Did you count books on one of your bookshelves yet? That one hit me hard in the wallet, as you can imagine! But it is for a great cause. If you have no idea what I am talking about, you can find out this week by picking up a coin box and the devotional/action guide that goes along with it. Both are available at the JOY Center table.

Read the story of Jesus' baptism in Luke 3, beginning at verse 15. And come prepared on Sunday to learn, to renew, and to get a little wet!

With faith, hope, and love,

Bill

Help Needed: We are in need of servant ministers to assist with our Technical Services Ministry on the HopeSpring campus. Technical Services takes care of all sound, lighting and media needs for worship services and other special events. We will provide full training and make sure everyone is comfortable with all equipment. Experience is not necessary for many of the needs but is helpful (but not required) for the sound needs. The time commitment is approximately 90 minutes for Sunday worship. Our goal is to obtain enough servant ministers to create a rotating schedule so those interested would be volunteering approximately once a month. Please contact Kelly Smith at ksmith@st.lukes.org or 407-876-4991 ext. 223 to sign up and/or for more information.
