A Note from Pastor Bill
Dear St. Luke's Saints:
So here's the resume of the kind of person God apparently likes to use for big jobs:
- Adopted as a child into a family of a different race
- Raised in a religious tradition of multiple deities
- Impulsive murderer
- Escaped fugitive
In case you were wondering, that's the partial resume of Moses. It represents the portion of his life before he was called by God to lead the Israelites to the Promised Land. The turning point for Moses came not at the burning bush, but actually at the watering well. My guess is that not many people know about the story at the well, where in the middle of the Sinai, in the middle of his sin, Moses found mercy. The same God who had told Moses' ancestor, Jacob, "I will not leave you" never left Moses, and in the absolute middle of nowhere, Moses found the place for a new start.
In the arid places of the Middle East wells were - and still are - places where people met and found commonality in their search for the one thing you can't live without: water. It is no coincidence that when John is given a vision of heaven in Revelation he sees water. "Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city." (Rev. 22:1) This water is not contained in a well from which one has to work to retrieve it. This water freely gushes forth for everyone.
This is the water of life and grace, fully released in heavenly glory. But Moses might have regarded the well in the wilderness in just the same way. What happened there changed his life one day and prepared him for the next 80 years of living. Read Exodus 2:1-10 to find out why. In that place God gave Moses a new start and a new family. That's exactly what God continues to do even in our own time.
If you are not too happy with your resume and are wondering if there's any water in any well for you, any hope in the wilderness for you, any chance of a new start for you, get yourself to St. Luke's on Sunday. As always, we've got Good News!
With faith, hope, and love,
Bill

June 9, 2010
Read: After a long time the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned under their slavery, and cried out. Out of the slavery their cry for help rose up to God. God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. God looked upon the Israelites, and God took notice of them. Exodus 2:23-25
Fun & Games
Trusting God often requires taking risks. Below are 10 instances from the Bible where people risked a lot, even their lives, but trusted God to do what had to be done. Because some of these events are well known, this game is one you can work through with your entire family. Working together, determine what the outcomes of these events were. Where appropriate, discuss what you might have done in these circumstances.
- Shiprah and Puah defied the Pharaoh by not killing Hebrew babies as they were born. What did God give them to reward them for their faithfulness? (See Exodus 1:15-20)
- Following God's command, Abraham prepared to sacrifice his son, Isaac. Why did God stop him, and what was the result of his faithfulness? (Gen. 22: 9-14)
- David fought Goliath with nothing more than a simple slingshot and five stones. What happened to David?(1 Sam. 17:41-51)
- Daniel was thrown into a den of lions rather than worship the king as a god. What happened to Daniel?(Dan. 6:16-26)
- Elijah challenged pagan priests to a contest to prove that there was only one true God. What was the contest, and who won? (1 Kings 18:20-40)
- Ruth, a Moabite woman, chose to serve Naomi and Naomi's God rather than return to Moab. What happened to Ruth and Naomi? (Ruth)
- Meshach, Shadrach and Abednego refused to bow down to an image of their king and were thrown into a fiery furnace. What happened to them? (Dan. 3:19-30)
- Rahab was a woman with a bad reputation who allowed Israelite spies to hide in her house even as they planned to destroy her city. What did she ask in return?(Joshua 2:1-21)
- Joseph refused to succumb to temptation and dishonor God, even though he was thrown in jail as a result. How did things work out for him?(Gen. 39:6-23)
- Moses led the Israelites to the edge of the Red Sea and discovered they were trapped between the sea and the approaching Egyptian army. How did God save them?(Exodus 14:10-25)
Pray this Prayer: Thank you, God, for showing us in so many ways that trusting you is far better than trusting ourselves. Amen.
