It’s hard to believe summer is already coming to a close. This morning, I had the privilege of taking our son, Gavin, to Olympia High School’s Freshman Frenzy as he prepares to begin high school with the Class of 2030. We walked into the auditorium (entering through a cheerleader tunnel) to a spirit-filled pep rally featuring the marching band playing all around the room. We heard the new principal and administration share their excitement and helpful information in preparation for a brand-new school year. It reminded me that every new season is an opportunity to learn, grow, and become.
That’s exactly where we are as a church family.
As one school year begins, we’re getting ready for a new class at Love University. Beginning this Sunday, we kick off a three-week series called Drama Class, where we’ll explore what it means to faithfully navigate the “stage of life.” Every one of us plays different roles throughout our lives as children, friends, parents, neighbors, coworkers, leaders, and disciples. The question is not whether we have a part to play, but how we live out that part in a way that reflects Christ.
To guide us, we’ll look at John Wesley’s Three General Rules: Do No Harm. Do Good. Stay in Love with God (traditionally phrased as “attending upon all the ordinances of God”). Though these simple rules were written nearly 300 years ago, they remain a remarkably practical script for everyday Christian living.
Throughout the series, we’ll journey through the story of Joseph in Genesis. Joseph’s life is full of family drama, unexpected plot twists, betrayal, forgiveness, and ultimately redemption. His story reminds us that even when life doesn’t follow the script we expected, God is still directing a greater story.
Adding another fun layer, Drama Class, will also draw lessons from The Prom, the Broadway musical that opens next Thursday, August 6, here at St. Luke’s. As our campus comes alive with music, theater, and storytelling, we’ll discover how great stories, both biblical and theatrical, help us reflect on our own lives and calling as followers of Jesus.
This Sunday, we begin with the first rule, Do No Harm, focusing on Genesis 37:1–4, 12–28 (I invite you to reread the entire story of Joseph: Genesis 37-50), where Joseph receives dreams and his brothers allow jealousy to shape their actions and cause a great deal of harm. Together, we’ll wrestle with how our choices impact the people around us.
Join us Sunday, as we start a new class and gather around the Lord’s Table for Holy Communion. Thankfully, that’s where Joseph’s story eventually leads… to reconciliation and the family gathered around a table once again.
So, whether you’re starting a new school year, entering a new season of life, or simply longing for a fresh beginning, come and dream what God has in store.
