Bags to Benches: the NexTrex Recycling Challenge
St. Luke’s is collecting the plastic film that kerbside recycling will not take. Our goal is a thousand pounds — and once we send it in, NexTrex gives us a bench made from recycled plastic for the campus.
How to take part
-
Collect it at home
Keep a bag by the door for plastic film. It has to be clean and dry.
-
Bring it on a Sunday
The white NexTrex bins are beside the trash and recycling at both worship venues.
-
Tell somebody
A thousand pounds is a lot of bread bags. Ask a friend to save theirs too.
What we can take
Clean and dry plastic film only. Anything with food residue on it cannot be recycled, and it spoils everything else in the bag.
- Grocery bags
- Bread bags
- Case overwrap — paper towels, toilet paper, bottled water
- Dry cleaning bags
- Plastic shipping envelopes
- Cereal box liners
- Bubble wrap and air pillows
- Ice bags
- Produce bags
Why it matters
Taking part keeps plastic out of landfill, conserves resources, and turns waste into something the church can actually sit on. Recycling is the second-best answer, though — alongside it, use less plastic to begin with.
