Robotics Lego Model Build Day

Help the Maxey Elementary Robotics team build their Lego models for competition!

Date: Saturday, September 27th

Time: 12pm – 2pm (Lunch will be provided)

Place: St. Luke’s UMC Youth Center

Volunteers will be paired with a student and help them follow the LEGO model instructions. The Lego “kits” for the models will be in numbered plastic bags as received. Everything needed to build a model will be in the kit. There will be a bin or box for each model that will have the bag (or bags) already in it. The bin/box will be given to a team of 1 volunteer and 1 student to build their model.

Step-by-step build instructions for each model are online, and the link for each model will be provided to the team assigned to a specific model. The instructions are in separate PDF files by model. The detailed instructions are visual and clearly show how the parts go together and in the exact sequence required.

This is a fun, learning event for the students and the volunteers.

Make an impact throughout the school year

Did you know?

  • There are 101 Title 1 Schools in OCPS.  Schools become Title 1 when at least 40% of the student populations is from low-income households.
  • There are 8,500 MVP students in OCPS.  MVP (McKinney-Vento Program) ensures tat studens experiencing homelessness have the right to free and accessible public education.

St. Luke’s works directly with OCPS schools, including our two Title 1 Elementary School partners,, Maxey and Mollie Ray Elementary.

Want to make an IMPACT?

If you have a heart for children and want to help students and teachers succeed, consider becoming an Educational IMPACT volunteer! St. Luke’s partners with two Title 1 Elementary Schools; Maxey Elementary in East Winter Garden, and Mollie Ray Elementary in Pine Hills. After hearing from our partner schools we know we need the following:

  • In-classroom volunteers.
    • Be a lunch time mentor weekly
    • Help provide tutoring
  • Event support.  Maxey and Mollie Ray organize school events for students, families, and teachers often needing extra hands. Events range from Math and Science nights to Holiday festivities like Fall Festivals.

We do an orientation with volunteers at St. Luke’s before sending them to the school. This is to help ensure that you are well-prepared and informed before heading into the classroom or at the schools  Volunteers must register with OCPS  ADDITIONS.

Go Full STEAM OCPS Math Bee

In May, Go Full STEAM hosted the 2025 Orange County fourth grade Math Bee at St. Luke’s UMC.  The event was hosted by News 6 Evening News Anchor, Ginger Gadsden.

Thank you to all of the volunteers and St. Luke’s staff members who stepped in to help at the Math Bee Final. We could not do it without you!

The Math Bee started in one school and in one classroom 15 years ago in 2009 under the St. Luke’s Educational IMPACT Ministry. This year, 24 Title 1 schools in OCPS participated in Math Bee under Go Full STEAM (a non-profit launched out of St. Luke’s as an umbrella organization for four Missions programs that grew beyond the scope of St. Luke’s and now are serving under-resourced students county-wide).

Go Full STEAM used a unified approach through specific areas of interest to open new worlds of opportunity for students. Their goal is to influence children’s lives by developing literacy, competency and a positive sense of self.

Go Full STEAM is comprised of 4 programs, Robotics Challenge, Arts After 5, Artworks and Math Bee.

What’s it’s like to be an IMPACT volunteer

Here’s a message from one of our IMPACT volunteers.

IMPACT volunteer Joan Weninger and her granddaughter

Hi St. Lukers!

Joan Weninger here! My husband and I have been members of St. Luke’s for four years. I’ve been asked to tell you why I enjoy volunteering at Maxey Elementary.

From the time I walk down the hall and into a classroom I feel joyful and grateful to have the opportunity to serve. I can’t believe I’m doing the Lord’s work! But that’s the nature of God. Whatever you do in His name, the more He gives back and I sure feel it!

Children are always thrilled to have someone walk into their classroom who cares enough to spend the time to be a cheerleader for them.

So, who wants to give and receive some joy?
