Character Breakdown
Edward Bloom
30s–40s (also plays himself as a teenager and in his early 60s)
A charismatic Southern storyteller who leaves small-town Ashton in search of adventure. Indentured with a traveling circus, he eventually meets the love of his life, Sandra, and begins family life with their son, Will. Edward’s heart, however, remains on the road as a traveling salesman. His tall tales reflect how he sees the world and the way he hopes his son will live. Comedy and charisma are essential. Performer must be an excellent singer and comfortable with contemporary rhythms and styles. Not exclusively a traditional Broadway sound.
Sandra Bloom
30s–40s (also plays herself as a teenager and in her early 60s)
Edward’s wife and the love of his life. Sandra is the bridge between Edward and Will, trying to heal the relationship between them even as she faces the grief of losing her husband. Performer must be an excellent singer, leaning toward a country style. Mezzo or soprano with strong mix to Eb/F.
Will Bloom
Mid–late 20s
Edward and Sandra’s son, now a reporter for the AP in Paris. Will values truth and fact, leading to a strained relationship with his father’s penchant for fantastical stories. Facing Edward’s terminal illness and his own impending fatherhood, Will embarks on a journey of understanding. Performer must be an excellent singer with a modern Broadway sensibility. Tenor with a sustained G.
Young Will
Age 8–11
The young version of Will is captivated but also skeptical of his father’s stories. With Edward often away, Young Will feels the responsibility of being the man of the house. Performer should be a good singer with a range from B below middle C to C an octave above middle C.
Karl the Giant
20s–late 30s
A misunderstood “monster” who bonds with Edward. Though his height will be augmented for fantasy sequences, the performer should naturally be very tall and comfortable on stilts. Basso profundo with a solid low E.
The Witch
20s–60s
Proprietress of a backwoods gin joint who also tells fortunes. The Witch immediately recognizes Edward’s special destiny. A dynamically powerful and tragic figure. Performer must have a commanding belt voice up to F#.
Jenny Hill
20s–mid 30s (also plays Jenny as a teenager and in her mid-50s)
Edward’s high school sweetheart who remains hopeful for his return. Life’s hardships eventually lead her to live isolated in a swamp shack. Mezzo soprano.
Josephine Bloom
20s
Will’s charming, funny, and supportive wife, pregnant through much of the story. She embraces Edward’s world with warmth and curiosity.
Amos Calloway
30s–40s
The quirky, down-market P.T. Barnum who owns the Calloway Circus. A lively, eccentric figure who strikes a pivotal bargain with Edward. Strong comic chops and character singing voice required.
Dr. Bennett / Judge / Others
Track Age: 40s–60s.
Edward’s trusted doctor and lifelong friend, along with additional small ensemble roles.
Don Price
20s–30s (also plays Don as a teenager)
Edward’s lifelong nemesis, a hot-headed and competitive bully. Performer must have strong comic chops. Baritone.
Zacky Price
20s–30s (also plays Zacky as a teenager and later in life)
Don’s skittish and easily-spooked younger brother. Ultimately plays a key role in saving Ashton. Performer must have strong comic chops. Tenor.
Ensemble Opportunities
Seeking strong singer-dancers for a vibrant and varied ensemble.
Roles include townsfolk, whimsical creatures, circus performers, USO dancers, saloon dancers, and magical figures.
Performers should demonstrate proficiency in both classical and contemporary musical theatre styles. Tap and acrobatic skills are a plus.
