Finding Community in God’s Family

Watch the video message below from Pastor Corey as he visits the HADESTOWN: Teen Edition set, and reflects on how the show’s themes connect with St. Luke’s core value of community. Drawing from Matthew 9, he reminds us that Jesus calls people into community so they can support, care for, and serve on another. Pastor Corey encourages everyone to join in worship this Sunday and celebrate the gift of belonging at St. Luke’s.

Hey everyone, happy Thursday. It’s me, Pastor Corey. I’m here in Founder’s Hall on the set of Hadestown. This is where some of our youth have been spending last week and this week during Theater Camp as they prepare for this weekend’s performances.

Hopefully, you already have your tickets for one of the three showings: Friday night, Saturday night, or Sunday afternoon. This weekend, we’ll not only experience an incredible musical, but we’ll also see a story that connects beautifully with this weekend’s core value: community.

As the story unfolds, the music plays, and the songs are sung, an important message rises to the surface: each and every one of us belongs to and is part of a community. Community is the third of our five core values here at St. Luke’s. We’ve already talked about acceptance and hospitality. We welcome people and extend hospitality so they can better understand who they are and know that they belong to the people of God.

This weekend, we’ll turn to a familiar passage from Matthew 9, where Jesus looks upon the crowds and sees people who seem helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. In response, Jesus gathers His twelve disciples, who become apostles, forming a community that can respond to the needs around them.

That’s what this weekend and this Sunday will remind us: each of us is part of God’s family and God’s people here at St. Luke’s. We are a community called to walk together, to be the presence, love, and grace of Christ for one another as we journey through life together.

I hope you’re having a great week, and I hope you’ll join us for worship this weekend as we once again remind one another that it’s not St. Luke’s without U.

God bless you. We’ll see you soon. Peace.
