Dear St. Lukers,
This past Sunday was a meaningful moment in the life of our church. It felt like a time of both reflection and anticipation, as we considered who we are and whom God is calling us to become together. I want to briefly share what was announced in worship regarding our pastoral leadership.
I am grateful to continue serving alongside Pastor Melissa and look forward to starting a full appointment year together.
As previously announced, Pastor Jad has been appointed as Senior Pastor of Christ Church in Fort Lauderdale. While this brings change, it is also a moment of deep gratitude. For 14 years, Jad has served faithfully among us (we will celebrate when he returns in June), and we trust that God is guiding him and Shelly into this next chapter.
I am also excited to share that Rev. Jayde Rasband has been appointed to join our pastoral team as an Associate Pastor. She brings a strong sense of calling, a deep love for the Church, and a joyful spirit. After my first conversation with her, I was genuinely filled with joy at the possibility of her joining our staff and congregation. She is being sent to us because of her giftedness, experience, and passion for ministry (watch Pastor Jayde’s video here!)
And that word sent is important.
In the United Methodist Church, pastors commit to itineracy. The willingness to go where we are appointed and sent by the bishop to serve where there is a need. We see this same pattern throughout our denomination, whether through clergy appointments, global missionaries, or the calling of every baptized Christian. As John Wesley taught, we are called to do all the good we can, in all the ways we can, to all the people we can.
We see this in Sunday’s text, John 20:19–23. On the evening of the resurrection, the disciples are gathered behind closed doors, afraid and uncertain. And Jesus comes and stands among them, offering peace and they are filled with joy. Then he says, “As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.” Sending calls for shaping…
This Sunday, we gather to be “Shaped by Forgiveness.” Together, we will explore how forgiven people become forgiving people, and how a Spirit-filled community becomes a peaceful presence in the world.
We are already seeing this take shape here. During worship, we will commission Stephen Ministers, the faithful individuals prepared and sent to walk alongside others in seasons of need with care and compassion.
As we move toward this Sunday, I invite you to reflect: Where is God shaping you right now? Where might God be sending you? And who in your life needs to experience the forgiveness you have received?
Join us, because it’s not Love University without U…
With love,
Pastor Corey
